These days more than ever (at least in our lifetime), many of us are searching for ways to enhance our self care practices. On top of that we are trying to do so while mostly at home. Skincare treatments are often one of the go-to items in self care regimens (myself included!), but that tends to focus on the face. I thought I’d spruce up my own regimen by adding in massage and making my own soothing, natural massage oil.
Atlanta has quite the running community and no shortage of races. It’s no surprise that it has rightfully and proudly claimed the nickname of Running City USA thanks to the Atlanta Track Club. One of the most popular (if not THE most) races every year in Atlanta and the southeast in general is the Peachtree Road Race. Put on by the AJC, The Atlanta Track Club and PNC Bank, it’s the largest 10k in the world with 60,000 participants! People come from different states to be part of this event. It’s held every year on July 4th and this year was the 50th anniversary of this much anticipated race.
Atlanta is quite an active city with a large community of people that enjoy hiking, yoga, running, kickboxing, kayaking, etc. Just about any physical activity you enjoy doing whether it’s indoors or outdoors, you most likely can find it here. As someone that enjoys working out, I love mixing it up and trying different workout classes around the city. Last weekend I got to experience a free class at The VibeRide in Midtown thanks to Fit Atlanta hosting an event there. The theme was ‘Tinsels and Tapbacks’ mixing some holiday flare in with a trap spin class!
In this article, I’m going to share wth you a brief intro into herbalism and how you can incorporate it for some relief from common ailments. For example, our diets, environmental factors, relationships, etc. can all effect how we feel.
So, what exactly is herbalism anyway? The formal definition of herbalism is “the study or practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of plants, now especially as a form of alternative medicine.” Utilizing plant-based alternatives instead of traditional pharmaceuticals can help us avoid toxic chemicals and harsh side effects. Just listening to a commercial for certain medications can be alarming when they speed through the long list of potential side effects. Herbal alternatives are safer for consumption, more affordable and easy to find.
Now let’s discuss some common conditions and see what plants and herbs can help us to overcome them!
Each fall and winter we know that the cold and flu season comes around along with the cooler temperatures. The winter temperatures here in Georgia tend to fluctuate quite a bit throughout the season and can contribute to us feeling under the weather. If you're looking for natural ways to arm your immune system (even if you're already sick), one of many ways is with elderberry syrup or extract.
Elderberry (also known as sambucus) comes from a flowering plant and is often used in medicine. Sambucus nigra, or European elder (aka black elder) is the specific species of elder that is most commonly used for medicinal purposes.
